The Role
In your role as a Senior Java Engineer (Contract), you'll have the opportunity to take charge of developing top-notch software solutions, leading technical initiatives, and offering guidance to our junior team members. You'll thrive in adapting to new methodologies, embracing agile engineering practices wholeheartedly, and advocating for Continuous Delivery. Collaboration will be key as you actively engage with our Engineering team, product managers, business analysts, and designers to deliver outstanding software solutions. Your influence within our engineering function will be pivotal in fostering a culture of high-quality practices.
Within our close-knit team, your responsibilities will include designing and implementing enhancements to our application logging system, ensuring compatibility with open telemetry standards, and meticulously considering performance implications in a highly latency-sensitive environment. Collaborating with our Site Reliability Engineering team, you'll also contribute to the creation of visualizations and alerting mechanisms in our enterprise monitoring tools.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include but not limited to
- Utilizing Java 11 to develop and upkeep software applications, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, efficient, thoroughly tested, and scalable code.
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to grasp business requirements and transform them into detailed technical specifications and software designs.
- Taking the lead on technical projects, encompassing pivotal decisions regarding architecture and design, conducting code reviews/pair programming sessions, and providing guidance to junior team members.
- Actively engaging in code reviews and pairing sessions with fellow engineers to uphold exemplary standards of workmanship.
- Championing and implementing best practices for Continuous Delivery, such as automated testing, streamlined build and deployment pipelines, and robust monitoring and alerting mechanisms.
- Remaining abreast of the latest industry trends and advancements in engineering and Continuous Delivery, and offering insights on integrating them into our development workflow.
- Effectively troubleshooting and resolving software defects and performance bottlenecks to ensure seamless operation.
About You
- A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience is required.
- Demonstrating a profound grasp of software development best practices, encompassing both object-oriented and functional programming paradigms, as well as design patterns.
- Proficiency in version control systems like Git is essential, along with prior experience utilizing code review tools.
- Possessing strong problem-solving and debugging skills, coupled with a meticulous attention to detail.
- Expertise in Java 11 and PostgresSQL is a must.
- Hands-on experience with Continuous Delivery practices, including automated testing, build and deployment pipelines, and effective monitoring and alerting systems.
- Familiarity with Cloud Infrastructure concepts, preferably within an AWS environment.
- Previous exposure to performance optimization techniques, opentelemetry standards, logging, and tracing methodologies.
- Demonstrating alignment with Pepperstone values is crucial.
- A dedicated commitment to continuous learning and professional development is highly valued.
Nice to have:
- Experience working with low latency applications in the financial markets industry would be advantageous.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and a Site Reliability Engineering philosophy would be beneficial.
- Previous exposure to logging and tracing tooling such as Sumologic, Datadog, Kibana, or Honeycomb is a plus.
